• Deputy Mayor Shanie Duff wasn’t as enthusiastic as her council colleagues Monday when they all raved about the new hotel for the corner of New Gower and Springdale streets in downtown St. John’s.
However, despite her concerns about it, she voted with the rest of council to allow Manga Hotels to proceed with the construction of the 12-storey hotel.
• Dr. Dick Barter says the current generation of teenagers is in a precarious position when compared with past generations.
“I think one of the most astounding facts is that the kids who are teenagers right now, they’re the first generation in a century who are not expected to live as long as their parents,” said Barter, an emergency room physician based in St. John’s since 1981.
“That’s a terrible thing when we’ve got so much technology and we can keep people alive so much longer. To think that they’re not going to make it that far because they’re developing chronic diseases at a much younger age, and a lot of that is because of bad eating habits, lack of activity, and so forth and so on.”
Three years ago, Barter was responsible for creating a local indoor cycling spin-a-thon fundraising event to aid the response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He has been a group indoor cycling instructor for six years. In 2011 that led to Spin 4 Kids, which supports the GoodLife Kids Foundation (GLKF), which aids Canadian organizations that promote healthy and active living among youth.
• Both the new chairman and CEO of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (CNLOPB) Scott Tessier and the board’s new vice-chairman, Ed Williams, attended the launch of Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Week 2013 on Monday morning.
It was their first day on the job with the offshore regulator after being named to the posts Jan. 24.
“It’s only been a couple of hours. So I’ve had enough time to go down to the office and meet the management team and a lot of the staff,” Tessier told The Telegram following the event, held at the Fisheries and Marine Institute in St. John’s.
