A weather system in Ontario has forced the cancellation of many flights today, including some departures and arrivals at St. John's International Airport.
Dozens of flights have been cancelled at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport because of a slow-moving storm in southern Ontario.
The weather system, which has paralyzed parts of the U.S. Midwest for the second time in a week, was making a slow eastward trek early Wednesday.
The departure board at Pearson was showing at least 106 cancelled flights through the late morning and at least 80 cancelled arrivals.
Most of the affected flights are to and from U.S. destinations coping with heavy, wet snow that has clogged roads and airports and blamed for at least three deaths.
The Toronto area received a heavy dose of rain and snow overnight and was expected to receive about five centimetres of additional snow throughout the day.
Areas north of the city received about 10 centimetres of snow during the night and Environment Canada said another five to 10 centimetres was likely Wednesday. Eastern Ontario was expected to receive about 15 centimetres by early Thursday.
Snowfall warnings have been posted for the Montreal region, with at least another 15 centimetres of snow in the forecast.
Travellers are urged to check their flight status before heading to the airports.
In St. John's and the Avalon region, high winds is causing drifting and white-out conditions in some areas.
The RCMP is asking motorists to use care and caution.
High winds are also affecting the Bell Island-Portugal Cove ferry service. Two vessels were on the tickle this morning, the MV Flanders and MV Grace Sparkes.
But, without hours, the MV Grace Sparkes had to be tied up because of weather.
The recorded phone information now says, "We will try to keep a regular schedule as long as we can."
According to Environment Canada, the Avalon region won't see snowfall accumulations like Ontario, but there is a system of snow and freezing drizzle coming our way tonight, with total accumulations of about two to four cms.

I agree with david ,the on goin strike by the maintenance people doesnt have any effect either that stuff dont delay people blame it on anything but the true reasons as long as we get our flights no one cares what a joke this place is
