• Many Members of the House of Assembly will have to get by with a $95,357 annual salary until 2015, after the House of Assembly Management Commission voted to freeze MHAs’ salaries until after the next election.
Going into Wednesday night’s meeting, the commission was considering modest pay increases starting in December.
But moments before the meeting, House of Assembly Speaker Ross Wiseman received a letter from Finance Minister Jerome Kennedy saying the government is strapped for cash, and MHAs’ salaries should be frozen.
• Simeon Tshakapesh, chief of the Mushuau Innu band council in Natuashish, says he accepts the apology of Steele Communications General Manager Mike Murphy, but his opinion on what should become of Open Line host Randy Simms remains unchanged.
“Randy Simms is out of line and he should be taken off the air and he should never be put on the airwaves again.”
• A renowned Canadian activist who has been involved with efforts at an international level to protect water resources says the provincial government, as well as the federal government, are not recognizing threats to theirs water supply.
“I think it’s fair to say the current government here ... the ruling party here, does not recognize the concerns around water and I think has this notion that there’s just unlimited water and it’s OK to do whatever you want.”
Barlow was in St. John’s Wednesday as this year’s speaker for the Global Citizens Forum, hosted by the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union.
