Rick Mercer, Gordon Pinsent, Shawn Doyle take home Canadian Film Award trophies

Newfoundlanders Rick Mercer and Gordon Pinsent and actor Shawn Doyle from Labrador walked away from the Canadian Film Awards in Toronto with trophies Thursday night.

It was the second industry gala for the awards, which, for the first time, combine the Geminis and the Genies. The finale, a two-hour live broadcast, will air on CBC Sunday evening at 8:30 p.m. local time.

Mercer, of “Rick Mercer Report” was presented with the awards for Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series; Best Music, Variety, Sketch Comedy or Talk Program; Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program (with Rick Currie, Greg Eckler, Chris Finn, Tim Steeves and George Westerholm), and Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program.

Pinsent won the award for Best Performance in a Guest Role, Dramatic Series for his portrayal of Maurice Beker on a “Republic of Doyle” episode called “Mirror, Mirror,” while Shawn Doyle, a native of Wabush, took home the trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program for playing first Canadian prime minister John A. MacDonald in the TV movie, “John A: Birth of a Country.” The movie snagged a total of four awards, also earning top honours for direction, writing and performance by an actor in a supporting role.

Other Newfoundlanders and Labradorians nominated for Canadian Screen Awards to be presented Sunday include Bob Cole (Best Sports Play-by-Play Announcer), National Film Board Producer Annette Clarke (Best Short Documentary), comedian Jonny Harris (Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program), Cathy Jones (Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role), and  Shaun Majumder (Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role). “Out With Dad,” a web series starring Darryl Dinn of Labrador, had been nominated for Best Original Program or Series Produced for Digital Media, Fiction, but lost to “Guidestones” at the first industry gala, Wednesday night.
