The Department of Transportation and Works today announced it has awarded a $40.6 million contract to HJ O’Connell Construction Limited for the Placentia lift bridge replacement project.
The contract award calls for the construction of a new vertical lift bridge and road approaches from Placentia and Jerseyside. The contract also includes the removal of the existing Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge.
“The new Placentia lift bridge is a lasting and very necessary infrastructure investment which will benefit the people of Placentia and surrounding communities for many years to come,” said Paul Davis, Minister of Transportation and Works, in a news released.
Ottawa is contributing $8 million to the project. Work is expected to begin in the spring and will take three years to complete.
The work was re-tendered to ensure a competitive process, and received three bids. The successful bid is $2.5 million lower than that received from a sole bidder in 2011.
In 2011, the province rejected a bid of $43 million to replace the bridge, saying it was almost $20 million over the expected cost. Since that time, the current bridge has undergone at least $1.7 million in repairs to keep it viable.
