The Telegram

The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.

Wednesday’s full edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Family  section.

• The government may have broken the law earlier this month when it handed over a package of orders in council to The Telegram in February, according to two lawyers in the Official Opposition who say the letter of the law indicates that no decisions of cabinet can be released by the government.

A spokeswoman for the government, speaking on behalf of Keith Hutchings, the minister responsible for access to information legislation, said the government isn’t breaking its own law.

However, The Telegram was not allowed to speak to Hutchings about the issue.

• It’s not a hiring freeze, but Memorial University has warned administrators in a memo to be cautious.

“Given that our 2013-14 operating grant from government is not known at this time and government has signalled that spending cuts will be necessary to achieve balanced provincial budgets in the next few fiscal years, it is wise to adopt a prudent approach with respect to the hiring process,” MUN provost and academic vice-president David Wardlaw said in a memo to the university’s senior academic administrators group.

“This is not a hiring freeze but the introduction of an extra degree of consideration, a result of which can be a delay in initiating the recruitment process for some positions.”

• Starting today, The Telegram adds a new feature to its business coverage. Every Wednesday, read The Telegram Natural Resources Notebook, a collection of news tidbits from the natural resource sector, from offshore oil to onshore mineral exploration and more.
