Earlier today, the Canadian Coast Guard Ship George R. Pearkes successfully escorted the provincial ferry Captain Earl W. Winsor through ice on the Fogo Island-Change Islands-Farewell crossing, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans said.
Another escort was scheduled to leave Farewell at 4 p.m.
Ice conditions in the afternoon were a little heavier than earlier today and, as a result, it may take more time to complete the run.
The George R. Pearkes is described on the Canadian Coast Guard website as a light icebreaker/large buoy tender built in 1986 in British Columbia. It operated in the Pacific and Quebec regions before being transferred to the Newfoundland and Labrador Region in 2004.
