A 47-year-old St. John’s man has been charged in relation to a child pornography investigation, the RNC and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today.

On Jan. 30, CBSA officers at the International Mail Centre in Toronto intercepted a package that was found to contain suspected child pornography.

On Tuesday, March 12, members of the RNC Criminal Investigation Division and the CBSA’s Criminal Investigations Division searched a home in St. John’s and arrested the man.

The accused is charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with possession of child pornography and the mailing of obscene material — including a sex doll depicted as a child.

Additional charges of smuggling and possession of prohibited goods contrary to sections 159 and 155 of the Customs Act were laid by CBSA.

The accused was arrested without incident and released to appear in provincial court at a later date.

The charges laid under the Criminal Code are the first to be laid in this province in relation to the item seized — the sex doll.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Child Exploitation Unit is asking anyone who has any information in relation to this incident or any other incident involving child pornography to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.

He has ABSOLUTELY done something wrong and crossed the line! He has worked in my house, I have a toddler! How would you feel if someone with those tendencies worked in your house around your child? He willingly and deliberately sought out a blow up doll of a child with 'pleasure accessories' to use in a sexual manner. Why do you think he purchased this overseas??? Because it was illegal in Canada! And he still did it! You try and bring something across the border that is illegal next time you go on vacation, good luck with that. Anonymous let him in your house to work around your kids .........

Mike, My caveat was "if" he did nothing to harm children. I read the article on VOCM which only mentioned the doll and this article mentions that charges were laid because of the doll. IF he had child pornography, or was caught molesting or harming a child in any other way, he should be arrested. The doll thing is weird though. I don't think he should be charged for having that. Though, if he was in possession of child pornography, it's probably a good way to beef up the charges.

I agree with anonymous that if he did not do anything to harm children, then he shouldn't be arrested. Who knows, maybe the doll would help keep him from harming children.

why do they not release their names so the public can keep their kids away from them,he could be out in the playgrounds of the city watching kids all day long. When these people are caught they should be moved to the waterford to get checked out and not released out into the public. we have one of these idiots out here in Clarkes Beach and they wont release his name even though we all know who and what it is.

Why was he arrested? The reason porn images of actual children are illegal is that actual children had to be abused to produce them. Why would a doll be illegal? It is sick, certainly, but lots of people do things others think is sick in the privacy of their own homes, and it's fine as long as no one is hurt. Who's being hurt? If you think this is a sure sign that the man must be abusing or likely to abuse actual children, I disagree. Lots of people fantasize about things they would never do in real life.
