The Telegram is branching out into an entirely new medium — television.
Through a partnership with Rogers TV, the newspaper will host a weekly show that will highlight The Telegram’s strength in local news, sports and arts coverage.
“Telegram TV” will air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on Rogers TV local channel 9 and will repeat throughout the week.
Hosts of “Telegram TV” will be senior reporter Steve Bartlett and arts reporter Tara Bradbury. However, the show will feature stories and segments by the entire Telegram newsroom team.
Kerry Hann, The Telegram’s managing editor, said the newsroom is excited about the new show.
“Our team is really looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities Telegram TV is going to bring,” he said. “We have a lot of ideas for the show and I think viewers are going to be impressed with the quality, depth and variety of the content we will be airing.”
Newsroom staff have been producing video segments for The Telegram website for some time and have even established an in-office studio.
“Our folks have really taken to video production, as demonstrated by some of the examples on our website. So, taking it to the next level of producing a news program was not a huge leap for us,” Hann said.
“But I can honestly say that the expertise of Rogers TV has certainly made that progression extremely smooth. Rogers TV station manager Linda Lambe and her staff have been fantastic in helping us put together a solid package.”
Lambe, in turn, says the partnership is a perfect way to enhance local programming for Rogers.
“Rogers TV is thrilled to be partnering with The Telegram in this new venture called Telegram TV,” Lambe said. “We’re committed to letting our viewers know what’s happening in our community. That’s why we exist. The combination of our Rogers TV production team and The Telegram’s award-winning journalists will only strengthen and enhance our local programming.”
Branching out to television sheds a new light on the many stories published in The Telegram, and on those in the newsroom who work hard each week to put it all together.
Telegram publisher and general manager Charles Stacey said the show will allow the audience to better get to know Telegram writers, editors and photographers, and bring a new perspective to the stories covered.
“We are quite excited about this venture into a new medium. Through television, we will now have the added ability to bring a more personal touch to the stories and information relevant to our audience,” Stacey said.
“Telegram TV will also give our readers and viewers a window into The Telegram — a chance to get to know our people a little better while also providing our talented staff a great opportunity to showcase their talents, skills and imagination.”
Ken Simmons, The Telegram’s new media editor, has been at the forefront of the project nurturing it from an idea into reality.
“It is a lot of work, but rewarding work,” Simmons said. “Adding a television segment to what The Telegram currently offers readers through print and online allows us to advance the stories further and give readers a behind the scenes perspective, as well.
“Moving into television is a natural progression for the paper. The days of the newspaper being something of today’s news being read tomorrow are long gone. We are current through our website and social media platforms, and now a new level is being added through television to give readers a more in depth understanding of the stories we cover.”
