The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary laid several impaired driving charges in the St. John's region Sunday on St. Patrick's Day.

One man was charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol limit above the legal limit after a traffic stop on Pitt’s Memorial Drive near Kilbride early Sunday. The accused was released to appear in court at a later date.

A man from Conception Bay South was charged with impaired driving and refusing the breathalyzer on Sunday. Police acted on a tip from a citizen and located the driver in the centre of St. John’s. The accused was held for court.

Another man was charged with impaired driving in the early morning hours Sunday, after being involved in a single-vehicle accident. Police say the accused was uninjured and is due in court at a later date.

A man was also charged with impaired driving by a drug after a traffic stop on Kenmount Road in St. John’s. He was arrested early Sunday and is due in court at a later date.

Three people were also detained under the Detention of Intoxicated Persons Act. No charges have been laid.

The RNC also charged an adult male with assault and breach of court order. The accused was held in custody to appear in court this morning.

Police say the assault occurred in the Freshwater Road area of St. John’s. No serious injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, early this morning, a woman was given a 90-day driving suspension for operating a motor vehicle with alcohol in her system above the legal limit after she was stopped by police.

Yup. it was St. Patrick's Day. But the sad truth is that it was just a Monday, with the cops a little more 'alert' than they usual would be.

Why is it we never see reports of people being stopped and charged with texting while driving? Today I witnessed a woman driving ahead of me almost swerve into oncoming traffic - which at highway speeds would have undoubtedly caused fatalities. As she pulled off at the next ramp I could see she was still "driving" head down, and texting. At least most drivers who have had a drink actually LOOK at the road! It is getting worse and worse here. Why are the police not cracking down on these people? Does someone actually have to be killed before something is done?
