A 22-year-old man was charged today with threatening RCMP officers with an axe at a home in Natuashish.

About 11:30 a.m., RCMP officers responded to a residence in the Labrador community where there were reports of a fight in progress.

Upon arrival, officers observed personal belongings — along with a box spring and mattress — outside the home after apparently being tossed out.

A woman approached the officers saying she was assaulted by a man in the residence and that he threw her items outside.

The officers entered the residence, just inside the front door, and saw the suspect at the top of a small set of stairs in the split-level entry home.

When the officers attempted to arrest the man, he reached around a corner and grabbed an axe. He held the axe above his head in an aggressive manner and said he was not going with the officers.

After repeated demands by police to drop the axe, the suspect complied and approached the officers at which time he was physically restrained, placed under arrest and charged.

The accused is also the subject of two outstanding undertakings before the court. He is being held in custody for a bail hearing on a number of charges.

No matter what caused the action of the axe wielding man he is lucky it was not down here in LA or he would have been full of about 100 bullet holes and dead as a door nail

Why is it that a good number of people like these are wandering about, endangering the population and breaking the law, when most of them have been released for prior offences? Why are they free or out on bail? Who let them out? The answer is that "we" did. We have to speak up and have our leaders change the laws to keep this scum behind bars and unable to harm others I would be happy to pay for more prisons, bigger prisons. Find some remote island , give them a sack of potato seeds and let then all live together. I wonder how long they would last. To me is all about safty. Safety for me, my family, my friends and my property. I don't give a damm about the reformation of offenders. I suspect a good number of bark suckers will objedt to my comments. Hey, then again, its because of these individuals that scum who should be behinf bars are set free. Thanks guys.

What makes a person think that they can hold up an axe in a threatening manner at police officers? Stupidity, alcohol, drugs, culture...perhaps, but its time our courts held these persons responsible and gave other like minded people something to fear. Jail, long periods. I'd prefer my tax dollars be spent keeping these people locked up for 5 to 10 years than putting the public and the police at risk every moment they are out in society! Its time our politicians wake up and pass very harsh mandatory minimum sentences.

Almost daily I read similar stories as the one above. There must be many people living there who are not CIVILIZED. Don't they have any CULTURE there at all? I thought that all of Labrador would be a safe place to live. ALCOHOL & DRUGS probably are causing a lot of disturbances there among the people. MAKE NATUASHISH a big PRISON, but take out the good civilized people first. It appears there won't be that many civilized people left to take out if the situation there keeps going on like it has been recently. If there are any smaller children there then they will get INFECTED with this way of life too. WHAT A PITY.
