A 22-year-old man was charged today with threatening RCMP officers with an axe at a home in Natuashish.
About 11:30 a.m., RCMP officers responded to a residence in the Labrador community where there were reports of a fight in progress.
Upon arrival, officers observed personal belongings — along with a box spring and mattress — outside the home after apparently being tossed out.
A woman approached the officers saying she was assaulted by a man in the residence and that he threw her items outside.
The officers entered the residence, just inside the front door, and saw the suspect at the top of a small set of stairs in the split-level entry home.
When the officers attempted to arrest the man, he reached around a corner and grabbed an axe. He held the axe above his head in an aggressive manner and said he was not going with the officers.
After repeated demands by police to drop the axe, the suspect complied and approached the officers at which time he was physically restrained, placed under arrest and charged.
The accused is also the subject of two outstanding undertakings before the court. He is being held in custody for a bail hearing on a number of charges.
