The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.
Wednesday’s full edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Business section.
• A man whose elder relative contracted a gastrointestinal illness at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s and subsequently died is questioning the leadership of Eastern Health in light of the health authority’s poor performance in a hand hygiene audit.
Harry Tucker’s female relative contracted Clostridium difficile (C. difficile). It causes inflammation of the colon, with symptoms including watery diarrhea, cramping and fever.
• By showing up at the St. John’s council meeting Tuesday, striking airport workers had hoped to get the city to apply some pressure to two of its members of the board of directors of the St. John’s Airport Authority.
But the mayor said the city can’t tell its board members what to do.
“We’re here today in front of city hall because the city has two appointees on the board of directors for the St. John’s airport and those appointees can end this strike, and they seem to be disengaged from the process and the operation of the airport and they seem to be accountable to nobody,” Chris Bussey told The Telegram prior to the start of the meeting.
• A St. John’s man serving a sentence of weekends at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) is complaining about being denied medical treatment, as well as unhygienic conditions.
Raymond Trudel, who says he serves his intermittent time on a driving while disqualified offence, alleges he was denied medical treatment on the weekend of March 1-4 while he suffered chest pains.
Trudel said his health ordeal began with throwing up and claims to have some family history of heart problems. He said he had chest pains that eventually subsided, but not without a day’s discomfort which was largely ignored by prison staff.
