A tender has been called for the construction of a new high school for the west end of St. John’s.

Education Minister Clyde Jackman said in a news release, site work is currently underway at the Topsail Road location, and with the announcement of this latest tender call, a contract is expected to be awarded and construction begin late this summer.

“This new facility will replace the aging Booth Memorial and Bishops College, and serve about 860 students,” Jackman said.

Weir’s Construction Ltd. of Conception Bay South was awarded a $3.6 million tender for site work in January.

“This new tender call is great news,” said St. John’s West MHA Dan Crummell. “It is another important step towards construction of the new high school and I am delighted that this project is progressing.”

Current construction and service contract tender notices are available on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador website at: www.tw.gov.nl.ca/TenderingandContracts.

We are just trying to cut costs in rural Newfoundland. Spending money in St. John's is fine because that is where all the people are, and that is where the majority of the tax revenue comes from. Bottom line, St. John's needs a school and its tax base can support it. So it gets a school
