Federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair will visit Labrador on Tuesday to help boost the profile of the party’s candidate for an upcoming byelection in the district.
Mulcair will join Harry Borlase in Labrador City, where they will host a public meeting in the community Tuesday evening.
Borlase won the nomination to run for the party in the byelection on Sunday, defeating two other candidates to become the second official candidate. Peter Penashue, who resigned from his seat in parliament earlier this month, is the Conservative candidate.
A date for the expected byelection has not been called. Liberal MHA Yvonne Jones already said she will seek the Liberal nomination, while former Liberal MP Todd Russell announced Monday he will not be doing so. Russell lost to Penashue by less than 100 votes in the 2011 general election.
Penashue resigned from his seat over concerns his campaign accepted illegal donations and exceeded the spending limit for the 2011 general election.
