The Toronto Marlies staked the St. John’s IceCaps to an early 1-0 lead, but roared back with three unanswered goals in a 4-2 American Hockey League win Saturday night at Mile One Centre.
The victory capped a weekend sweep for the Marlies, who picked up a 3-2 overtime decision Friday night.
Stuart Percy, Spencer Abbott, Kenny Ryan, with the game-winner, and Greg Scott, into an empty net, scored for the Marlies, who improved their record to 40-21-3-6 on the season as Toronto battles Texas and Grand Rapids for the Western Conference lead.
The Marlies also made Garret Sparkes a winner in his pro debut. Sparkes, who appeared in 60 of 68 games with the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm this season, stopped 21 of the 23 shots the IceCaps managed over 60 minutes.
Red-hot Eric O’Dell scored both goals for the IceCaps, giving him 28 on the year, and 50 points, tying him with Spencer Machacek for the most points in a season by an IceCaps player.
Eddie Pasquale was solid in goal for the IceCaps with 30 saves.
The IceCaps fall to 29-34-2-4 on the year.
St. John’s plays host to the Portland Pirates Tuesday and Wednesday at Mile One, and closes out its regular season at home next Saturday and Sunday against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
