A tender for the construction of a community centre for the Southlands area of St. John’s was approved at Monday’s meeting of St. John’s City Council.
Magna Contracting and Management Inc. was awarded the project with a bid of just under $3 million.
A news release notes the funding for the project was first announced in September 2012 during a joint announcement between the provincial government and the city in a 50-50 cost-shared arrangement.
Public consultations with residents were held with area residents throughout the process. Issues covered included ensuring there was proper buffering with the residential neighbourhood, the parking lot was relocated to be further away from the children’s playground and the city maximized the footprint of the building to ensure it could accommodate as many users as possible given the land available.
