The Telegram

The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.

Thursday’s full edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Community section.

• A few weeks after their ranks were gutted by provincial budget cuts, sheriff’s officers in St. John’s are feeling a little more secure.

But with so many still having lost their jobs, they say time will tell just how secure things will be at court.

“I’m feeling a little better today,” one sheriff’s officer said, who didn’t want to be identified, in an interview with The Telegram Wednesday.

• Two and a half years after hurricane Igor swept across the eastern part of Newfoundland wreaking havoc, the provincial government is still taking care of the remaining infrastructure repairs.

According to Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL), close to $4 million will be spent on 19 projects ranging from damaged pathways to storm sewers and bridges in communities such as Bay de Verde, Bishop’s Falls, Gambo and Sunnyside.

“You’ve got to remember that there’s 118 communities that experienced the damage,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Kevin O’Brien, who is also the minister responsible for FES-NL. “We had a lot of work to get done, and then there’s the capacity issue too as well in Newfoundland and Labrador with regards to the construction industry, so you can only get so much work done.”

• There will be a lot of unhappy children in the city this weekend when they learn their favourite climbing, sliding, jumping, bumping centre has been shut down.

And even though the owners of Axtion Climb were working with the City of Mount Pearl Wednesday to address the fact the company was operating without an occupancy permit, it is going to take time to get the activity facility back up and running.

“There is a process that has to be followed,” Mayor Randy Simms told The Telegram Wednesday.
