Premier Kathy Dunderdale said she deleted her Twitter profile Wednesday night after discovering it was linked to a pornographic account.

Following Tuesday’s ejection of NDP MHA Gerry Rogers from the House of Assembly over her membership in an anti-Dunderdale Facebook group in which some of the users made death threats against the premier, a CBC news report revealed questionable associations among PC members’ own social media profiles, including that the premier’s Twitter account was following an X-rated profile that promotes pornographic videos.

“When I found that somebody had attached disturbing material to my account, I dissassociated myself with it immediately and took it down immediately,” said the premier Thursday morning, adding that she has been involved in anti-violence work her entire life. “I particularly understand how pornography contributes to violence against women and the degradation of women, and let me tell you, I am not going to be associated with anything that promotes that kind of behaviour.”

The premier said her Twitter account hasn’t been active for a year — purposefully.

“I have decided to disengage from Twitter,” she said. “I don’t mind if my cabinet ministers or my ministers or other people do it, but as premier of the province, I have taken the position, personally, that I don’t want to be engaged.”

Dunderdale said she accepted Rogers’ explanation that she was added to the group without her knowledge, but noted Rogers has refused to remove her Facebook account from the group.

“Given that she said that she had no knowledge about her being added to the group, that that was done without her knowledge, I accepted that,” said Dunderdale. “I said, ‘Fair enough. You didn’t know that you were on the group. But now you do, so are you going to dissassociate yourself with the messaging that’s there, in signficiant amounts on the site?’ And she’s chosen to do something else, and I think that’s really disappointing, but it is what is.”

Dunderdale said MHAs are held to a higher standard. “We live in public life. We’re examples to people. We need to be careful about what we’re doing.”, Twitter: @TelegramDaniel

Electronic media is the end. No need to expand. This will destroy what we built up from the past. Greed and profit is tearing it down.

For God's sake , leave Cathy D. alone. The woman was elected in nl. to do a job.First one in the country. Let her do the job and when the time is up , then we can assess her work. Who ever we put in can only carry on the work she started because of the money already spent. That has happened before , even federally.

So our Premier was added to a group for porn. How long have you been added to this group Kathy? Why didn't you notice earlier? Does this make you guilty by association since you did not remove yourself earlier? What you said about Gerry was terrible. You should have been the bigger person and stood up and said you know she didn't have anything to do with it. Let the RCMP do their job...and for god sakes admit when you are WRONG!

Sorry, I'm old school unlike many long winded posters here. I gave you your chance, you have lost the confidence so leave now or it will be done at the earliest voter opportunity. (election)

Watched her "explain" on television. I used to admire her even handedness, her refusal to be strident and bombastic. But, she is now looking so very weak and lost, practically pleading for validation and legitimacy. When that appearance sets in, there is no recovery.

Its all a huge Deal she got death threats against her on "facebook" Yet not to long ago someone had death threats posted all over facebook, and Twitter about a friend of mine, The person even went as far as posting a CASH reward if someone would "take care of her" and the Cops did nothing!! They just said be careful and let us know if anything happens??? Isn't ti too late then?? What makes Dunderdale so Special? Not much in my eyes!

Hey Kathy, I see all these people picking on you, saying nothing but bad things, nothing good at all. Here is what you should do. Have a meeting with your government, legalize marijuana here in Newfoundland, and you will a god in this country. If the USA can do it in a handful of their states, Canada can do it in our Provinces. Make the move, be the first, and everyone will love you forever!

This is how social media works for all the dummies out there. Facebook is not going to charge you money if you don't share a status. It is not Best Friend Day or Babies in Heaven day, ever. There is no guy in a blue car or white van on your street. Bill Gates will not give you $10 bucks for sharing his photo. Stop looking at porn and blaming your computer. You are the perv, we all know it. People make fake accounts, use fake photographs and give fake information just to mess with you. You are not as popular as how big your friend list is or how many followers you have. This can be fakes for $5 bucks. People join groups with a legit profile and change it to porn on a daily basis. This happens on twitter and facebook and any other social media platform available. You are also added to groups without your knowledge. People can post things in their profile, your friend can read it but you cannot. You may have thousands of followers on twitter but no one really cares about you. It is all about the numbers. Some people join groups and follow you just to read what is going on. I follow every person from Newfoundland and Labrador, every political person as well as people I had no clue I even followed. I'm friends with people on facebook I would not say hello to if my life depended on it. This is life. This is reality and this is the internet. If any government member would like to employ me for my wisdom, message me.

Isn't it wonderful to live in a province where our politicians have nothing more pressing to worry about than who is a member of what Facebook group? Don't worry about the 1,000 or so people who have lost their jobs, or the massive cuts that threaten the viability of various organisations and ministries. Don't worry about the worsening state of the province's health care or education. Oh, and no need to be upset about the 90 million given to a company that can't make a profit. No, the government has far more important things to worry about. Can anyone, anywhere, take this government seriously?

What a pathetic bunch of knuckle-dragging troglodytes. If this is any indication of this government's understanding of technology, they shouldn't even be allowed to run a bath let alone a province.

I want to say that I have and I will support my local NDP M.H.A. Gerry Roger. The Speaker of the House of Assembly was too quick to judge and was acting in a too partisan (non-objective) way in having Gerry evicted from the House. The P.C.'s are having their own form of "McCarthyism" - "Guilt by Association." And Yes Gerry was right in refusing to apologize for a comment she didn't make. Really the Tories are using Gerry Rogers incidence to divert the Public's attention from their own unpopular Budgetary Cutbacks! Of anybody who needs to apologize is the P.C.'s who are making life harder for us "Havenot" people in Newfoundland & Labrador! And, King, Dunderdale, Wiseman et al ought to apoligize for the way they acted against Ms. Rogers

Who was "knowingly" a member of a group promoting death threats? Not Gerry Rogers. She didn't know that someone added her to the group. The group itself didn't make death threats, one rogue commenter did. That comment was removed. You are right about one thing, this is dumb.

She needs to step down now and call an election. Time for imediate change in the province before she sinks it completely. "Transparent", ya right. A premier of a Province needs to educate themselves on social media. When Bob Barker was accused of sexually harrassing one of the models, did she ban "The Price is Right" from her home?

    April 18, 2013 - 11:17

No one is completely innocent here but the government's stand on this issue is so over-the-top as to be a bad Newfie joke. I am very disappointed in the ruling of the Speaker, to eject Ms Rogers from the House, as I believe it was utterly wrong and contemptible of him to ask for an apology, given the member's lack of knowledge of said statements. Ms Rogers clearly needs to disassociate herself from any individual who was making such threats, and she did, but the threats are matters for the police....not the House of Assembly. It would have been prudent for Ms Rogers to also disassociate herself from this group, in light of the issues that arose. However, it is to the government's eternal shame that they chose to politicize the matter by implicating another member in that fashion.

With children committing sucide because of facebook bully in Canda and in the USA our government leaders should know that our children are watching this scenario. I applaud Kathy for taking down her site. A true leader shows by example. It shows our children she is doing the right thing. And grown adults slinging mud on line is bully tactics. Is this how we want our children to act. For example the silly Harper adds. Shame on him too.....And I am so tired of the union adds. So depressing for children to watch them over and over. What a waste of money.

This is so dumb, its called SPAM people! Its the same thing as receiving them in your email, does that make you guilty? Does anyone know anything about email and social networking, you would know these things are beyond your control. What I do have a problem is knowingly being a member of a group promoting death threats. If she didn't know before, fine, but to know and remain?? Thats not good.

    • Kris
      April 18, 2013 - 11:18

I'm a member of that facebook group. It isn't a group about uttering death threats, it isn't a group about promoting hate of the premier. It is a group where people are discussing how the cuts are affecting them and how disappointed and angry they are about it. Essentially, it's online protest. 1 person added a threatening comment. The comment was deleted, as was the group member that made it because the group doesn't condone that type of speech. I don't condone what that person says and I hardly think I'm standing by their message by staying in the group when they and their comment have already been removed. Saying Gerry Rogers associates herself with that kind of behaviour simply for being a member of a facebook group is RIDICULOUS. If you are smart enough to realize that spam in a thing on facebook, you're smart enough to realize that there are a lot of morons on there running their mouth too. Think about it: 1 person in a group of 2000+ made a really horrible comment and it was removed. Do you honestly think that the other 2000+ people think the same way??? This whole fiasco is the most asinine thing I've ever heard.

I think you're following the government's propaganda here MUDDERL. I've seen this group page with my own eyes. There is nothing - no evidence whatsoever - that would lead anyone with a sensible, rationale brain to conclude that this group is setup to be a hate group. Its intention is to act as a sounding board for citizen's frustrations with the current regime. Because one or two people lacking in common sense post hateful and threatening remarks, you believe that the whole platform should be condemned and disavowed? That's absurd! By that logic, every open line radio show on VOCM should have been canceled after Randy Simms' comments over a month ago. At least, he was the one moderator; something that the ones making these sketchy comments were not.
