Workers asked to leave; no night shift happening

Dozens of Innu protesters gathered at the entrance to the Muskrat Falls worksite today, angry over an alleged incident where a project manager was overheard making a racial slur about Innu workers

By early evening, almost all the protesters had gathered deep into the worksite, where many trailers are set up. By 6 p.m. the protesters decided that no work was going to be done that night.

“At the moment the site is being shut down,” said Innu Nation Deputy Grand Chief Jeremy Andrew. “All the (workers) that are onsite are being asked to leave the site.”

The protest stems from when two Innu cleaners at the worksite say they overheard a project manager make a racial slur regarding Innu people.

A representative from Nalcor said the incident is under investigation.

Those who were scheduled to work the night, starting at 6 p.m., were told not to come in for their shift. It's now being reported that Friday's day shift has also been cancelled.

Innu leaders such as Mushuau Innu Band Chief Simeon Tshakapesh, D Jeremy Andrew, and Sheshatshiu Innu Chief Andrew Penashue were present at the demonstration, which was organized by angry residents of the Innu Community.

“This is a community-led protest. The Innu Nation never sent anyone up here, or the band council,” says Andrew.

And they wonder why nobody wants to hire them. Imagine if companies in AB had to shut down if somebody insulted a Newfie. There wouldn't be one left. Didn't take long for the Innu leaders to get there.

More power to the Innu! I wonder what NALCOR will tell the Premier to do about this situation? Seems like they are the only ones in the province who get everything they want out of the PC's...might as well rename us NALCOR-land and NALCOR-ador

Are you serious? Imagine if we decided to protest everytime someone spoke out or slurred Newfoundlanders or townies or baymen, we would be on the streets all the time. Please grow up and help us build a stronger province. We have enough politicians trying to destroy this great province... Jen
