The Telegram

The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.

Wednesday’s full edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Business section.

• Reaction to a report from the federal auditor general on Canada’s search-and-rescue (SAR) system was swift, with some suggesting issues outlined in it have existed for years.

“Some of these things were evident in 2004 when the Ryan’s Commander went down,” said Johanna Ryan Guy, who lost two brothers at sea when that vessel capsized near Bonavista. She believes they would have survived the incident if a swifter response took place.

“The only thing, really, is that now there is yet ... another report.”

• If Tom Hann was a vendor he’d have no trouble setting up in the soon-to-be-vacant Metrobus depot to sell his wares.

The St. John’s city councillor is a fan of using part of the depot to develop a community market for farmers and entrepreneurs who sell produce and baked goods, and artists and craftspeople who make a living by selling their own creations.

The city is working with the St. John’s Farmers’ Market Co-op to look at the possibility of finding a new home for the market and the idea of moving into the depot came about a few months ago when the two groups got together to talk.

The committee formed from that meeting sees potential in the site on Freshwater Road and determined it’s worth further investigation.

• Accused murderer Trevor Pardy wants to hire private counsel to represent him, but doesn’t have the money to do so, and the amount that will be provided for him to hire a lawyer by the Legal Aid Commission — about $60 an hour — isn’t an amount most private counsels will work for. They can charge up to four times that amount. Moreover, lawyers working for the Legal Aid Commission will work for that price, but Pardy hasn’t found one he’s happy with.

So he wants to make an application to the Attorney General for the government to pay for private counsel of his choice.

The problem is Pardy needs a lawyer to help him make that application, so either a private counsel is going to have to work for the commission price for the estimated half a day it will take for the application to be presented, or Pardy will have to accept a legal aid lawyer to do it.
