The president of the Nunatsiavut Government in Labrador was “shocked and saddened” when she learned former Innu Grand Chief Joseph Riche had tragically died.
Riche’s body was recovered Thursday from Park Lake, approximately 80 kilometres south of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. His canoe reported overturned the night before while he and others were out on a hunting trip.
“Joseph was a well-respected Innu leader who had a deep sense of pride for his people,” said Nunatsiavut president Sarah Leo in a news release issued over the weekend.
“He was a visionary, having played a key role in advancing the Innu Nation’s land claim through the New Dawn Agreement, by helping to secure benefits from the Muskrat Falls Project as well as financial redress from the Churchill Falls Project.”
Leo went on to extend her condolences to Riche’s family and friends on behalf of her government.
“While he will be sadly missed, his legacy will live on for many generations.”
