The RNC is continuing to investigate an apartment fire on Freshwater Road in St. John’s Wednesday evening that left a woman and her nine-year-old son temporarily homeless.
About 10:30 p.m. that night RNC officers, along with firefighters from St. John’s Regional Fire Department, responded to a call of a residential fire on Freshwater Road. The apartment in question sustained extensive damage.
The RNC says that, at this time, the fire does not appear to be accidental and the investigation into the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The RNC General Investigation Unit is asking anyone who may have any information in relation to the fire to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
Meantime, the Canadian Red Cross has helped the woman and her son with emergency lodging, food and other support.
The fire was contained to one apartment. Other tenants in the 16-unit building were evacuated for about an hour, but were allowed to return home after the blaze was extinguished and smoke was ventilated from the building.
