The man suspected in the brutal slaying of a man at a house on Tessier Place in St. John's in March has now been charged with planning to escape custody.

Ken Edward Green, 34, appeared in provincial court this morning via video link from Her Majesty's Penitentiary.

Green faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 47-year-old St. John’s man, Joey Whalen, who died days after an assault at a home on Tessier Place in St. John’s March 18.

Between March 23 and 25, Green reportedly conspired with another prisoner, Matthew O'Quinn of Corner Brook, to escape through a window at the Waterford Hospital, where Green had been remanded for a week-long psychiatric assessment.

Green's case will be called in court again June 6.

O'Quinn — who faces charges in Stephenville, including forcible confinement — was also charged in connection with the alleged escape plan. He appeared in St. John's court Thursday and will be back in Stephenville court June 10.
