Two requests for proposals have been issued for the construction of a new ferry terminal in North Sydney, N.S.

Marine Atlantic says interested contractors have until June 10 to submit bids for work on the site, including utilities and paving.

The deadline to submit bids for construction of the terminal is June 24.

The federal Crown corporation says the new building will be built across from the existing facility and adjacent to downtown businesses.

It says the terminal will be modern, efficient and environmentally friendly with new amenities for passengers travelling between Cape Breton and Newfoundland.

Marine Atlantic says work has been ongoing to improve its property in North Sydney, including dock renovations and upgrades to electrical systems.

Great news! About time! Now, if Marine Atlantic would do away with their old system of having all of the ferry passengers park their cars, trucks and camper vehicles in the big parking lot and wait there for hours on end before the ferry is prepared to allow the vehicles to go on board of the ferry. It would make more sense and improve the travel experience to allow each car, truck or camper vehicle to drive directly onto the ferry as soon as they arrive and allow the passengers to go to their seats or cabins or just tour around the ship or get a hot meal until it is time to depart. Changing the system may create some inconvenience for the ferry crew who are cleaning rooms or restocking supplies but surely it could be done to allow the passengers to avoid long hours of boring waiting in their cars in the parking lot or in the ferry terminal prior to departure. Such a system may also reduce turn around departure times.

As if we are not paying enough for Marine Atlantic services now we have to incur another hike in prices to pay for a new terminal.
