About five hours after the RBC Financial Group bank in Torbay was robbed at knife point this afternoon, the RNC sent out a news release confirming it had arrested two people in connection with the incident.

A 20-year-old man has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and disguise with intent. The man is also believed to be responsible for another armed robbery, which happened April 29 at the Bank of Montreal.

A 19-year-old woman was charged with armed robbery and conspiracy.

The man and woman were arrested without incident, the RNC said, and will be held to appear in court.

Earlier story:

The RNC is looking for a man in a blue hoodie who robbed the RBC Financial Group bank in Torbay at knife point this afternoon.

Police were called to the bank about 2:37 p.m. on a sunny, bright afternoon, where the glass-door entrance of the building faces the busy main highway through the town.

RNC Const. Talia Murphy, media relations officer, says anyone who may have seen the man in the blue hoodie, or anyone acting suspicious in the area around the time of the robbery, to call the RNC.

The suspect entered the bank armed with a knife and the hood up. He demanded cash and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

Whether or not there was a getaway vehicle nearby is part of the ongoing investigation.

There were no injuries sustained during the commission of the offence.

Murphy said she did not know at this point whether the robbery was connected to any other recent armed robberies.

This is not the first time the bank in Torbay was targetted.

In December 2004, the bank was held up by a man with an unloaded, sawed-off shotgun. In that robbery, the robber got out of the bank with $7,000 Cdn and $2,000 U.S. The suspect was arrested shortly after and later pleaded guilty to the offence, receiving a seven-year prison sentence.

In today’s robbery, the RNC has not disclosed the amount of cash taken.

Anyone who has information that would assist in identifying the suspect, or who has any information in relation to this crime, is asked to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.

Much appreciation and congratulations to the RNC for tracking these dangerous criminals down. Yes, they sometimes take a fair amount of flack, but we are thankful to the men and women of the RNC for protecting the peace and keeping us safe. We will all sleep better tonight because of your hard work.
