As of Monday morning, Ferryland RCMP are still searching for a missing kayaker who is presumed to have drowned.

The search has been ongoing since last Friday. A kayak was recovered that evening south of the Southern Shore community.

On Saturday, the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax determined that all efforts to locate a survivor had been exhausted and subsequently granted a search reduction.

That decision took into account water and weather conditions, as well as the fact the missing person apparently did not have a life jacket or survival suit, according to Joint Task Force Atlantic.

The RCMP is now the lead agency for the search, which is being treated as a missing person case.
