Sofyan Boalag

Sofyan Boalag will have been behind bars for at least a year before he sees the inside of a courtroom again.

The 33-year-old — who was arrested in December 2012 and charged with multiple violent sexual assaults in the capital city last fall — won’t have his case called again in provincial court until December.

That’s when lawyers are expected to argue pre-trial applications.

The decision to set the matter over was made during a pre-trial conference Friday, when lawyers met with provincial Chief Judge Mark Pike to discuss the case. Boalag wasn’t there for the meeting.

Jason Edwards — who is representing Boalag with co-counsel Tim O’Brien — told Pike and Crown prosecutor Kathleen O’Reilly that he is also representing accused murderer David Folker, whose eight-week trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 7. As a result, Edwards will be tied up for a few months during the fall and likely won’t be available until December.

Pike and the lawyers agreed to have another pre-trial conference in October, at which time the dates to argue pre-trial applications will be heard.

It means if Boalag’s case goes to trial, it likely won’t get underway until 2014.

Boalag faces close to two dozen charges stemming from allegations he sexually assaulted five women and one teenaged girl.

He has already pleaded not guilty to more than a dozen counts relating to three complainants.

A few months ago, police laid an additional eight charges in connection with three other complainants.

Boalag was arrested Dec. 10, 2012, and denied bail 11 days later.

His charges include sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault causing bodily harm and sexual interference, robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing stolen property.

He was picked up by police shortly after reports that a man had sexually assaulted women as they were walking home from the downtown area towards the city centre at night.

Other charges were laid in relation to reports he sexually assaulted a girl younger than 16 with a piece of wood in the LeMarchant Road area.
