One week after taking over ferry service to Fogo Island, an electrical issue on the MV Beaumont Hamel has forced the Department of Transportation and Works to cancel ferry crossings until further notice.
The Beaumont Hamel began providing ferry service from Farewell to Change Islands and Fogo Island last weekend. It was removed from the Bell Island run in February to accommodate its annual refit.
The electrical issue was identified Saturday afternoon, according to the department in an email statement issued Sunday. Contractors are in the process of assessing the extent of the electrical issue and how long repairs will take.
Fixed wing aircraft service was scheduled to begin Sunday afternoon from Gander International Airport, with the last flight scheduled to leave Fogo Island at 8:45 p.m.
A helicopter is making trips from Farewell to Change Islands. The last flight from Change Islands was due to depart at 6 p.m. Sunday.
The MV Captain Earl W. Winsor, the vessel that typically serves Fogo Island and Change Islands, left the area last weekend to undergo an underwater survey and inspection at the dry dock in St. John’s.
That work is expected to last two weeks.
An annual refit for the vessel is due to take place in September.
The only operating swing vessel in the province, the MV Sound of Islay, is serving as a second vessel for the Bell Island ferry service.
