NDP candidate Jason Spingle says while he didn’t win the byelection in Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Clair Tuesday, he didn’t lose either.

The L’Anse-au-Clair resident finished in second place in the byelection behind Liberal candidate Lisa Dempster but also helped bring tremendous gains to the NDP in the district, as they saw an increase from 44 votes in 2011 to 703 votes in 2013.

Perhaps most importantly to him and his family, he saw overwhelming support in his hometown where he received 103 of 123 votes.

The results causes Spingle to remain hopeful for the future of the NDP in the province, citing leader Lorraine Michael’s popularity and the party’s lead in recent polls as reasons for optimism. He believes the increase in NDP support in Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Clair is an indicator of the NDPs popularity.

“There are good things on the horizon for the NDP, there’s no doubt about that,” he says. “And I think the results of this election are proof of that.”

He extended a thank-you to all of his volunteers, supporters, the NDP staff and caucus, his campaign managers, and the entire Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Loup district.

He also congratulated both of his opponents on what he calls a “very positive campaign” and wished Dempster success on addressing the issues and getting results for the people of Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Clair.

Spingle will go back to his work with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers’ Union tackling issues for fishermen in the area.

“I’ll be back on the job serving the people of Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Clair in the capacity I served them in previously. And I’ll continue to do what I did before: work hard for them and I think, in turn, you’re working hard for the district. I’m not going too far away and that’s a positive thing.”
