Communities within Nunatsiavut will hold vigils tonight to remember Bernice Rich, the 21-year-old Innu woman whose body was found in a wooded area in Sheshatshiu on June 14.

The vigils were planned by the Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women office, AnanauKatiget Tumingit, the Women’s Policy office in Nain, and Victim Services.

“Even though we may not have known Bernice personally, we are standing together in her memory, to condemn what happened to her and to send a strong message that violence against women has to stop,” says Nunatsiavut’s Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, Patricia Kemuksigak.

The vigils will be held Nain, Hopedale, Postville and Makkovik, beginning at 9 p.m.

I think this is an excellent response by the women's and community organizations involved. Congratulations for stepping forward on this critical issue. It has to stop!
