It's because the news chooses stories that involve crime over everything else. If one defined culture on the basis of it's news stories, most every culture throughout North America would be categorized as culture of fear. Crime has in no way increased in Newfoundland or any other Canadian province in recent years. However, our awareness of criminal activity has increased. As such, news agencies are contributing in a sense to the further development of a fearful culture in which people will believe that their local society has become less safe in nature. It all comes back to the idea that the medium is the message. However, as far as news agencies are concerned it is not about an accurate message. In a capitalist society, it will always be about the message that sells, whether accurate or not.
