Twitter announcement promises "energy/passion"

St. John's businesswoman Cathy Bennett announced on Twitter tonight she will be running for leadership of the provincial Liberal party.

It appears that St. John's businesswoman Cathy Bennett is throwing herself into the realm of politics, and running for the leadership of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party.

Bennett took to Twitter Monday night to post, “Time to take my energy/passion for NL to a new place - #Liberalleadership. With the support of family, Liberals & Team Cathy.”

The announcement was made shortly before 10 p.m. on Canada Day.

Last week, blogger Ed Hollett and the CBC reported that Bennett was considering a leadership run. Sources confirmed to The Telegram that somebody had picked up a nomination package on Bennett's behalf from Liberal Party headquarters.

An emailed statement on Bennett's behalf confirmed that she was thinking about it.

“Should Ms. Bennett decide to pursue the bid, it will be with the kind of focused commitment, passion and dedication that she has demonstrated as a successful business community leader," last week's statement said.

Bennett is the CEO of the Bennett Group of Cos. and was a board member of Nalcor between 2007 and 2012.

Nominations for the Liberal Leadership close this Friday. Already, interim leader Dwight Ball said he plans on running. On Friday, MHA Jim Bennett announced he'll join the race.

Former MHA Danny Dumaresque has told the media he plans on making an announcement on whether he'll be running at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Organizations: Liberal Party, Bennett's, CBC Bennett Group

It's about time for the Liberal party to clear the decks of clowns like Ball, Dumaresque, and Jim Bennett and try to become a professional party again. They should also get rid of idiots like Eddie Joyce. As much as Dunderdale needs to be replaced, it's impossible to consider the bunch of Liberal losers. Maybe they'll bring back "take it or leave it" Efford

My guess is that Williams and the corporate elite in this province will put money on both horses names Cathy. A win by either would serve their purposes equally well.

Why is it that people think they should be leader without being a MHA first? I also feel as Ms. Bennett has given her support for Muskrat Falls, if she is successful in becoming leader and winning the election, we will never find out what Muskrat Falls has cost the tax payers of this province.

Thanks Cathy for entering the race to lead the Liberal party. Your energy and passion will transform our province.

it doesn't matter where their money comes from, as long as a person has common since and the know how of running a business, Kathy Bennett has proven both. I think this she is the best one for the Liberals to take the election to a win. I was behind Cathy D 100% at first, but I have been disappointed in many ways. Now all the Liberal party has to do it get to work and get some great people to run in the districts. It takes more than a great leader to run a province, you have to have your team with you. Look back at the way Danny put together the PC party, he said it was like putting together a great hockey team. You're a great business woman, pick your team like you pick your managers.

So excited to see this. She has a wealth of experience as a leader and in the business community. We need a fresh face for the Liberals and she is one of the strongest to put forth.

What a a joke. This woman sat on NALCOR, and donated to the Cons for years. She is one of Danny's buddies. Does she think the Liberal party will fall for such a transparent power grab?? If they somehow do, does she honestly think she will receive public support with her past record? How much integrity does she have if she changes allegiances when it suits her?? No thanks.....

The unfortunate product of too many ego-boosting speeches to the Board of Trade. Now from always admired to always questioned and 24 hour days for years and years. She should have had a long talk to Danny before she jumped. Danny, Dean, Cathy - not much difference between the Tories and the Grits and where these parties' money comes from,eh?

Making an announcement such as this one via Twitter and at 10:00 pm on national holiday demonstrates this person does not understand politics or communications.

Those were my thoughts too when I read the 2nd and 3rd paragraph. So awkward, the medium as well as the time the announcement was made is just too unprofessional.

My prediction....with Bennett the Liberals form a government...with Dumaresque they move to third.

At least she has a business back ground, something our current premier does not have.....and it clearly shows. This should be interesting over the next 1 1/2 years to election, especially with the PC's dismal approval standings and the anti business NDP's led by "Nun" Michael. May be wise for Kathy to step down if there is any chance for her party to govern in 2015, but she is too arrogant and self centered for that.

Danny had a business background and look where that got us. Rather than being repealed, Bill 129 would continue to be enshrined for at least another five years under Ms. Bennett & that's bad news.

Hat's off to Cathy Bennett for throwing her hat into the ring!! Finally, after all those years of supporting the Liberal Party, through thick or thin, she has indeed used that unmatched loyalty, and rightfully so, to step forward and offer herself as a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party. My wise old Grandmother had a saying - " Oh my dear , da utter gall ah she" Nuff said!!

She should have no problem winning the leadership.....especially with clowns like Bennett and Ball.

What a joke. I'd vote for the NDP or Marijuana party before voting for "Liberal" Cathy Bennett.
