The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary announced late Thursday afternoon that the forest fire burning in western Labrador has forced police to cease escorting traffic on the Trans Labrador Highway.
Police said the decision was made out of concern for the safety of both the public and personnel working to control fires in the area.
The highway has been closed for almost two weeks, but some traffic has been allowed to pass through with an escort.
The RNC said the suspension of escorted rides on the highway will remain in effect until further notice.
