A water bomber in Labrador

Smoke from Quebec fires that was affecting Labrador West has improved this morning, according to the Department of Natural Resources website.

Very little smoke is being reported in the area and ground crews have been deployed throughout various sites to focus their efforts on locating and extinguishing hot spots. Helicopters equipped with buckets will also be assisting the fire fighters and water bombers are available as required.

The amount of precipitation in the past 24 hours varied throughout the area from 5 – 10 mm.

Earlier story:

Smoke from nearby Quebec forest fires continues to impact communities in Labrador West while crews continue to battle a fire near Wabush itself.

Three water bombers, six helicopters, forty personnel, and one incident management team are still assigned to the fire, according to an update on the provincial government website. However, limited visibility on the fire site means that water bombers have not been deployed yet today while helicopters are working the fire. The site says that ground crews have been deployed and are working on hotspots throughout the fire area.

Currently the area is receiving some precipitation.

Meanwhile, the RNC advises that vehicle escorts along route 500 have resumed as of 11:15 a.m. July 6th.

Motorists are advised that the checkpoint remains at Route 500 intersection with Route 503 near Labrador City and Wabush and extends eastward along Route 500 to Ashuanipi.

Delays should be anticipate and travellers are advised to plan ahead and arrange accommodations in advance. Availability in Churchill Falls is limited.

911 services in the area are still down in Labrador West. The RNC is advising the public of numbers that can be used in case of emergency while the service is down.
