A man from Sheaves Cove on the province's Port au Port Peninsula is facing eight charges for unsafe storage of firearms, three charges for unsafe storage of ammunition, and three breaches of a court undertaking.

According to the Bay St. George RCMP, Gerard Leonard Smith was placed on an undertaking on July 5 in relation to a charge of uttering threats. Conditions of that undertaking were for Smith to turn any firearms he had in his possession over to police, not to possess any firearms, ammunition or weapons, and to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The following day RCMP officers executed a public interest search warrant at Smith's home and seized a large quantity of unsecured firearms and ammunition.

Smith was arrested today in connection with the firearms violations and is to appear in Stephenville provincial court this afternoon to answer to the charges.
