Vendors who operate in the city of St. John’s are already prohibited from using portable generators. Those rules were further clarified by an amendment to the city’s bylaw following a St.John’s city council decision Monday. — Telegram file photo
A clarification was made to the vendor bylaw about the use of portable generators.
Coun. Danny Breen said that an ammendment was needed to clearly state that they are not allowed for use by street vendors.
Generators are already prohibited, but Breen said under the current bylaw that rule was unclear. The reason for the ban on generators was due to noise, safety and also environmental concerns.
Council voted to amend the bylaw to make it clear that portable generators are not allowed.
Another part of the vendor by-law was removed. It stated that mobile street vendors were not allowed within 100 metres of the kiosks that existed on Harbour Drive.
Those kiosks have since been removed as the waterfront goes through further development.
Breen called it “housekeeping” to remove the part of the bylaw keeping vendors 100 metres from kiosks which no longer exist.
