St. John’s — Jackie Connolly, a local nurse and volunteer, has made it to the Top 20 of Walmart Canada’s Mom of the Year, it was announced today.

From the Top 20, a Top 8 will be selected.

Should Connolly win, Walmart Canada will donate $100,000 to Broken Earth — a volunteer task force supporting relief work in Haiti that Connolly is a member of — while giving Connolly $10,000 for herself.

Voting for Walmart Canada’s Mom of the year takes place online at http://www.momoftheyear.ca/ and through Facebook.

A news release notes that over 24,600 entries from across Canada were received for this year’s competition.

Connolly is not only a dedicated mother, but a constant community volunteer and a veteran member of Team Broken Earth. The team was assembled to restore strength and hope to the Haitian people in the aftermath of one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history. The team is composed of physicians, nurses and physiotherapists from Canada .

“Jackie’s not just an important member of the team on the ground in Haiti,” said Dr. Andrew Furey, Broken Earth’s team leader. “But her tireless efforts in fundraising have helped us return to Haiti again and again. She is an amazing nurse, mother and human being”

Broken Earth members volunteer their vacation time and skills to work at a hospital in Haiti in a sustained effort to improve health care in an environment that is still recovering from the devastating earthquake of 2010.

“Jackie has such a big heart,” said Dr. Jeremy Pridham, a veteran team member of Broken Earth. “I’ve seen her hold and comfort frightened children in Haiti and nurture them as if they were her own. That’s a true mom. She goes above and beyond to comfort those around her. She’s a real natural. ”

Connolly said to be nominated is an honour.

“The volunteer work that I do means the world to me,” she said.

“Helping the children and families in Haiti has changed my life. Winning this money for Broken Earth would be so exciting as I know that this money would help out with so many initiatives there.”

Walmart is one of the worst employers in the world. Being recognized by this corporation is something a person with integrity should respectfully turn down in my opinion.

It too bad a lady like this who does so much for so many, needs to have her integrity questioned from a contest,if more people like her with the integrity she has, done as much as she did this world would be a better place, and then people like you who do F &)( all to help anyone could learn a thing or to about integrity ,by the way no one put a gun to anyone's head to work for any company, you don't like it ,leave!
