News sites to offer provincial ABE program. — provincial government chart

The provincial adult basic education program will be delivered at 14 new sites in all communities where it had previously been provided by the College of the North Atlantic, the provincial government announced today.

“The awarding of successful bids for all tendered Adult Basic Education locations in Newfoundland and Labrador reflects the provincial government's unwavering commitment to delivering quality adult education programming that is efficient, affordable and effective,” said Kevin O’Brien, acting Minister of Advanced Education and Skills.

The provincial government announced in the last provincial budget that the Adult Basic Education program would be moved out of College of the North Atlantic to allow the college to focus on the delivery of post-secondary programs that meet a growing demand for skilled labour.

According to the news release, staff with Advanced Education and Skills have been working with adult learners to help in their transition and will now follow up to assist with their move to the new training providers.

All institutions and organizations that deliver the Adult Basic Education program in the province are required to meet quality standards as defined by the Department of Advanced Education and Skills.

“With a growing demand for skilled labour and the need for an educated workforce at an all-time high, it is vital that our government make improvements and investments that support education and career opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” O’Brien said. “This includes improving the delivery of Adult Basic Education for learners to help them secure a prosperous future.”
