Truck driver, passenger critical after TCH crash near Howley

The driver and passenger of a transport truck were critically injured when the vehicle overturned in the west-bound lane of the Trans Canada Highway near Howley on the province’s west coast in early hours this morning.

Both accident victims, who are from Brampton, Ontario, were transported to Western Memorial Regional Hospital and are expected to be airlifted to St. John's later this morning for further examination and treatment.

Deer Lake RCMP received the call of the accident about 2:30 a.m.

The truck was hauling caplin at the time and the Department of Transport was contacted to assist with cleaning up the TCH which was covered in fish.

A transport driver who witnessed the collision advised police that he had seen a moose on the highway at the time of the collision.

Traffic Services West is assisting with the investigation and a collision analyst has been called to the scene.
