The RNC in Labrador West is advising the motoring public that as of 1:30 p.m. today, the Labrador Highway (Route 500) will be open to through traffic from the Quebec border to Gull Island, which is 82 km from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
While the forest fire remains a concern in the Labrador West area, it is no longer an immediate threat to Route 500.
The RNC notes, however, people who venture off Route 500 to cabin and recreation areas are reminded that the area between Route 500 and Southeast Arm along Route 500 has been significantly damaged by the forest fire. For this reason, people should keep safety uppermost in their mind.
Access to the area of Blueberry Hill and Moose Head Lake cabin area remain closed due to concerns of possible toxins resulting from the fire and the downed aircraft at Moose Head Lake.
People traveling in the area of Route 500 between Wabush and Southeast Arm should monitor the local media outlets for updates should the situation with the forest fire change.
