Sawed-off shotgun among weapons found

Two men were arrested in Paradise on Wednesday after guns and drugs were seized from a home in the community.

A 25-year-old man was held in custody on multiple firearms related charges, while a 22-year-old male was released from police custody after he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and production of a controlled substance.

One of the guns was a Lee-Enfield bolt-action rifle with a short magazine and ammunition, while the other was a sawed-off Tupper lever action shotgun. Police said an unspecified quantity of marijuana was also seized from the home in the area of Ashlen Crescent. Ashlen Crescent is a residential area located off of St. Thomas Line.

The arrests were made as part of a joint forces operation involving the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and the RCMP. They executed a search warrant as part of an ongoing investigation Wednesday evening at the home.

RNC Const. Talia Murphy told reporters Thursday the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges could be laid in the matter. She said the sawed-off shotgun is a restricted weapon for which a licence cannot be obtained.

Asked about the weapons’ possible connection to any other crimes committed, Murphy said that issue will be taken into account as part of the ongoing investigation.

As for the discovery of such weapons in a residential neighbourhood, Murphy said people in the area should not fear for their safety, but advised that anyone who witnesses suspicious activities should contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Both of the accused were arrested without incident, according to Murphy.

The 25-year-old male faces charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon or restricted firearm with ammunition, three counts of contravention of firearm storage regulations breaches of possession contrary to order and a breach of a court order.

why shouldnt residents fear for their safetly when these drugged out fools are running around with guns? If that 303 was shot off in their own house the bullet could easily go through their house and into a neighbouring house...The intention of a sawed off is to conceal it, ie for driving around etc..something tells me these guys arent gun collectors lol
