Planning is underway for the development of a new skateboard park in Stephenville that will honour the memory of a young man who helped develop the original skate park in the town.

The Adam Piercey Memorial Skate Park Committee has received approval from the Town of Stephenville to install this new skate park in the same location as the original one, which was located behind the Caribou Curling Club.

Not only did the Town of Stephenville approve the proposal, but they also donated $20,000 towards the park’s development.

The committee is now fundraising an additional $20,000 to offset the cost of the design and installation of this park by the Canadian Ramp Company.

“Our committee is honoured to have approval to place a skate park in honour of Adam Piercey, who was such a fine upstanding young man,” said Maria Churchill, committee chairperson.

It was during the flood of September 2005 that the original skate park was destroyed.

“The youth of our community are in desperate need of a new skate park to keep them off the streets and in a safe, well-lit area,” Ms. Churchill said.

Mr. Piercey tragically died in 2009 in a work-related accident in Fort McMurray, Alta., at the age of 26. He was an avid skater and thought of life as “live simple, give more, expect less.”

Ms. Churchill said it’s in his honour the committee is raising money for the installation of a new skate park in Stephenville and they are now accepting donations by mail, e-transfers, and PayPal. Money transfers can be e-mailed to: adampierceymemorialskatepark@hotmail.com; donations can be mailed to: Adam Piercey Memorial Skate Park Committee, 18 Whalen Cres., Stephenville, NL, A2N 3T3.
