A 60-year-old man who was fishing for trout over the weekend was located Sunday after he apparently became lost because of heavy fog in Newfoundland and Labrador.

According to Holyrood RCMP, police were made aware of the man’s situation Saturday evening after he contacted his family shortly before his cellphone’s battery ran out of power. He was reportedly fishing for trout near the Witless Bay Line.

Police located the man Sunday afternoon in the Mobile Big Pond area with help from the Central Avalon Ground Search and Rescue Team, Newfoundland Helicopters in Clarenville, and RCMP police dog services. The man found a remote cabin and spent the night there.

Holyrood RCMP are advising people to be prepared if they plan to venture into the wilderness. They should have adequate food and water, proper clothing, a fully-charged cellphone, and a compass or GPS. Police said they should also let friends or family know where they are going and when they expect to return home.
