A man in his 40s was hospitalized this week after being mauled by a polar bear in the Torngat Mountains in Labrador.

A spokesman for Parks Canada says the man was attacked in his tent in the national park at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Peter Deering says there was a doctor in the group of hikers who helped stabilize the injured man before he was flown to a trauma centre in Quebec.

Deering says the eight people were members of the Sierra Club environmental group.
