Firefighters from the St. John's Regional Fire Department are in the process of rescuing a woman from an embankment of the Waterford River in Bowring Park in St. John's.

The woman is laying partially in the water at the bottom of the embankment, which is about 15 feet. She is conscious and alert and speaking to firefighters.

Rescue officials are awaiting a basket in which to place the woman so they can hoist her to the top of the embankment.

It is unknown at this point how the woman got there.
