Sept. 13, 2012 Longtime Progressive Conservative MHA Tom Osborne shocks the Newfoundland and Labrador political world by walking away from the Tories, saying he could no longer support the leadership of Premier Kathy Dunderdale. The one-time Tory cabinet minister says he’d now be sitting as an independent in the House of Assembly. Both the Liberals and the NDP immediately said that Osborne was welcome to join their party.

Members of the PC caucus react quickly.

“Good riddance,” Advanced Education and Skills Minister Joan Shea tells The Telegram. “Sometimes a team is actually made stronger by getting rid of a member, not always by adding a member, and I think that’s exactly where we are today.”

In the House of Assembly in the fall session, things are pretty quiet for Osborne. By and large, PC caucus members limit his opportunities to speak and he doesn’t get to ask questions during question period. He proposes an amendment to a piece of legislation and it is summarily shot down.

While settling into life as an independent MHA, Osborne says he’s planning to canvass the people in his district before he makes a move to another political party.

Osborne says he’s delivering his annual district newsletter which includes a card inviting constituents to tell him where they think he should go.

“I will consider your feedback as I make my decision,” the small white card says, asking constituents whether Osborne should join the Liberals, join the NDP or stay as an independent. The card also offers these options: “We support the person; we will support you whatever party you join” and “Does not matter; we do not support you.”

Osborne tells The Telegram that he’s getting ready to make an announcement on his political future — likely in the coming week.

He won’t give any hints, except to say that the news will be coming soon.

“I think I’ll be making an announcement next week,” he says
