The RNC has issued a safety advisory to parents, drivers and the general public as the 2013-14 school year begins this week in the province.
Back to school safety tips include:
• Parents should educate their children on the proper use of crosswalk and for them to use a marked crosswalk whenever possible and wait for traffic to stop completely before crossing the street.
• Whenever possible walk children to the bus stop or school, and supervise them while they wait for the bus. Encourage children to walk to and from school or the bus stop with friends.
• While boarding a school bus, children should line up in single file and wait on the sidewalk until the bus has come to a complete stop and has opened its doors.
• Motorists are asked to use extra care and caution in school zones.
The motoring public is advised that it is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to pass a school bus that has red lights flashing and in the process of loading and unloading.
The RNC will be stepping up patrols of school zones and will be paying particular attentions to school safety zones over the coming weeks and months to ensure the safety of students returning to schools.
