The dean of engineering for Memorial University of Newfoundland says there will be consequences for a sexualized beer mug that has prompted the school’s engineering society to apologize.

Greg Naterer (NAT’-er-er) says he’s disturbed by the mugs selected by the society for a recent student party off-campus.

The yellow souvenir mugs feature a cartoon image of a barely dressed woman and the words: “If She’s Thirsty ... Give her the ... D (DAY).”

The words play on the party’s D-Day theme and refer to a phrase that has its origins from a pornography website and its use in stand-up comedy.

The D represents the first letter of a slang term for penis that’s used in the phrase.

Naterer says the mugs show poor judgment but would not elaborate on potential consequences as he investigates.

The engineering society has apologized and says it regrets that the design reflects so poorly on a faculty that promotes equality.

This time in our lives when we teach our children to respect women, the adult students are promoting easy and fare game towards them. This is the third time now in just a few days that female university students are treated with disrespect. With an attitude like this, one don't have to wonder why they are enlarging safe houses in our city. We fought for equality, keep the porn in the gutter where it belongs!!

They used to have a Humanities course at MUN Engr. It discussed the effect of Engineering and Technology on Society. Maybe it is time that the course also include the effect that society has on engineers. The Program is also co-operative (internships). It is linked to heavy industry, construction and society in general c/w its "pop culture". Geeks and nerds (disgusting terms IMO) return to school with sometime negative blue collar influences. Instead of just a surveying course for novice interns, perhaps the course should also include curricula dealing with the hazards of industry (Government included) - physical AND social. The Dean has no control over industry much less society. Maybe some day the caption will say "offer" instead of "give" and "D" will stand for the current term for "J"(oint) - currently more politically popular than even Beer? Humour in good taste should be inclusive. This is not inclusive - not funny.

The Engineering Society has apologized ? No problem. We realize that the frontal lobe of the brain doesn't fully develop until people are in their mid 20's. That's the part of the brain that enables people to realize what the consequences of their actions could be. But hey, they're university students, I'm just a retired old fart, what do I know ?.

It is worthwhile to note that the student executive of the engineering society chose the design, and the executive is made up of 6 females and 8 males.
