Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of central and eastern Newfoundland.

According to a warning issued late Saturday morning, heavy showers will be intermittent, resulting in highly variable rainfall amounts. However, it said rainfall rates could at times exceed levels warranting a warning.

Some of these areas have already experienced heavy showers this morning. Environment Canada expects further heavy showers will stay west of the Avalon Peninsula until Saturday night and continue into Sunday.

The special weather statement applies to the St. John’s area, much of the Avalon Peninsula, the Clarenville area, the Bonavista Peninsula, Terra Nova, the Gander area, Bay of Exploits, the Grand Falls-Windsor area, Buchans and the interior, the Burin Peninsula, and Burgeo-Ramea.

Western Newfoundland, the southern coast and portions of the Northern Peninsula are expected to be the heaviest hit areas as the remanents of a tropical depression makes its way though the province on Saturday.

In its latest update as of Saturday morning concerning the tropical depression called Gabrielle, Environment Canada said heavy rain is expected to become “more persistent” in the evening on the Connaigre Peninsula and eastern parts of the Northern Peninsula before tapering off Sunday morning, with total rainfall accumulation estimates ranging from 40 milimetres to 70.

Environment Canada also called for heavy rain in the Burgeo-Ramea area and the Burin Peninsula, with total accumulation estimates ranging from 25 milimetres to 45 by Sunday morning.

Heavy rain is expected to eventually taper off Saturday morning for the rest of the Northern Peninsula and change to scattered showers.

A rainfall warning for Gros Morne was lifted Saturday morning, and special weather statements for the Corner Brook area, Green Bay-White Bay and Bay St. George were also lifted.
