Session discusses opportunities for local businesses

An informational breakfast hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) this morning was just the start of a series of events aimed to connect existing and would-be business leaders in this province with major project opportunities.

The event, at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John's, opened with an address from Business Minister Keith Hutchings who spoke about the provincial government's gender equity provisions for large mining and oil projects, but also efforts towards supplier diversity.

“As a province, we certainly value our partnership with NLOWE and understand the importance of advancing opportunities for women entrepreneurs,” Hutchings said.

From frontline workers to business owners, he said the province needs to have people and businesses to meet the requirements of the major projects now on and being put to paper.

“Newfoundland and Labrador will require thousands of skilled workers in the coming years and we will need increased participation from women, in all sectors of our society, in order to meet increasing demand from industry,” he said.

He was followed by Tanya Noseworthy, a representative from the provincial Department of Natural Resources who walked through existing major projects and projects "on tap" for suppliers - such as an underground mine at Voisey's Bay and potential future iron ore development at Julienne Lake.

The event continued from there with a panel discussion featuring women business owners.

NLOWE is set to hold further events later this fall as part of its Exploration Series on natural resource projects. The next is subtitled “Navigating the Supply Chain,” to be held at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s on Oct. 2.
